How To Select The Best Tattoos For You

This may sound strange but many people who decide to have get tattoos for the first time have no idea what kind of tattoo design they want. All they know is they want some done! No problem there really - half of the fun is actually getting your skin emblazoned with a great tattoo picture. But of course, you have to choose what tattoo design you want before you make the trip to your local tattoo artist.

Selecting Tattoo Design Tips - Meet Jerry...

So how do you choose a great tattoo design? Well it all depends on who you are as a person. Obviously, you want tattoos that suit your taste and reflect you as a person - your essence, your beliefs; what makes you tick. Good tattos are those that hint at your personality, either in an overt or subtle way.

Perhaps the best way to help you settle on a design is by example. Let's imagine a guy named Jerry. Jerry is a typical Wall Street dude, always dressed up like he's got a business meeting every five minutes. He's into trading and does a little business consulting on the side. Jerry is corporate and can talk people under the table if he has to. Making money is his business, and business is good!

But on the inside, he's a little kid who loves his fun. When office hours are over, he's out in his jeans and t-shirt, spending what's left of the night on some wild road to trip to who knows where. He's a free-spirited adventurer who doesn't take his day job too seriously; it wouldn't be surprising if he called his secretary the following morning to say he's off sick... in Vegas, shooting craps. Businessman? Sure. 18 year old trapped in a 30 year old body? Totally.

So one day he wants to get his first in a series of planned tattoos and is wondering what tattoo design to get. His corporate high life doesn't exactly allow him much time to examine the tattoos and design books of the local tattoo gurus. What to get, what to get? Jerry suddenly remembers the Looney Tunes icon, the Roadrunner. Why, it's so childishly cool, it's perfect!

The Roadrunner is always a step ahead of his rival, Wily Coyote; he's smart and knows an Acme megabomb from a mile off; he's fast and has a seemingly endless supply of energy; he's cool, and doesn't let the desert and a manic predator ruffle his feathers. That's Jerry, through and through. The next day, he gets his tattoo and smiles proudly in the mirror every 10 seconds for practically the rest of his life. Jerry is a happy man.

The lessons here? There are two. First, tattos should be fun. Just because you're a school teacher doesn't mean you should get a tattoo of a blackboard on your arm. Maybe you're a bird lover, in which case a sharp-looking vulture might be more apt on the back of your shoulder.

Second, tattoos should be personal. Jerry probably liked the Roadrunner growing up. What did you enjoy as a child? The Transformers? Dungeons and Dragons? What one thing played a huge role in forming your mind and giving you hours and hours of fun as a kid? However, be careful with how "personal" you get. If you're thinking of having the name of your girlfriend/boyfriend tattooed on your buttocks, think again. What if a few weeks from now you're no longer with your girl/guy? The tattoo might serve as a reminder of pain and not happiness.

The point is, tattoos should be all about you, and not what you think people will like to see. The last thing you should do is get tattoos that will please others and not yourself. Go for tattoo designs that speak to you, that resonate with your mind. Only when you've completely thought the design through and thrilled with the concept can you be sure that your tattoo works. And you know what they say... a tattoo that works is a tattoo that rocks!
