How To Get A Tattoo Removed

Some people want to get rid of tattoos but are not sure of the best way to do so. Some aren't even sure it's possible. Fortunately, for those who desperately need to erase some tattoos, it is. There are at least four ways to have a tattoo removed, all painful, and most of them expensive. But, if you really want to have that tattoo of He-Man erased from all memory or, on a more serious note, have a swastika removed from your arm, it will probably be worth it. Here are the procedures:

Laser. This is a very popular (yet expensive) way to erase tattoos. Basically, the tattoo is pumped with a laser – either as a wave of continuous light energy or in pulses, depending on the approach. The laser will break up the ink particles for them to be naturally absorbed and dispersed by the body. The process usually takes a few weeks to accomplish but the clean results are most favored by doctors and patients alike.

Excision. This might be the way to go especially if you tattoo is small. Excision is the surgical removal of skin. It will leave a scar of course; the bigger the tattoo the longer the procedure (done in stages) and the larger the scar. The skin is numbed before surgery; bleeding is minimal and can be controlled.

Dermabrasion. To get rid of tattoos using this technique, the tattoo is frozen by means of a special spray then frayed with a rotary abrasive tool, which makes the skin peel. Bleeding will probably occur during this procedure which is why dressings are quickly applied to the wound.

Salabrasion. Perhaps the oldest way to remove tattoos, the tattooed area is first numbed with an anesthetic and then wiped with salty water. It is then scrubbed with an abrasive object until the skin is dark red. Scarring is always certain.

As we mentioned, getting a tattoo removed can be a painful and expensive process. So carefully weigh your options. Talk to your physician before undergoing any kind of tattoo removal surgery. Ask around and do as much research as you can so you fully understand the procedures available as well as the best rates and physicians out there. Always make sure that the one performing the operation is qualified and has your best interests at heart.

And remember, having a tattoo removed will always end in some kind of scar and/or discoloration. It had better be worth it. Have no illusions as to the outcome; your skin will never be like the way it was before.
